On the Trail with Turkey’s Wolf-Fighting Dogs

A new article in Outside magazine about Kangal dogs mentions the USDA-WS-NWRC Livestock Guard Dog Research Project. I’m thankful for the press, but they got a couple things wrong:

  1. USDA-WS-NWRC in collaboration with Utah State University did import livestock guard dogs from Turkey for use in the research project, but the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service are not involved in the project.
  2. We do not breed guard dogs as part of the research project. In fact, protocol is to have them spayed/neutered when they are about 1 year or age.
